GBLA Elections will be held in May says federal secretary for G-B and Kashmir Affairs
GILGIT: Elections for the legislative assembly of Gilgit – Baltistan [G-B] will be held in May, a senior government official said on Thursday.
The decision of holding elections came 50 days after the Pakistan Peoples Party led coalition government of G-B completed its five year term on 10th December.
“This has been decided and a notification has also been issued,” Shahidullah Baig, federal secretary for G-B and Kashmir Affairs told Outpost.
Baig said a local person has been appointed as chief elections commissioner who is capable of delivering as per expectations.
Last week, 12-member interim cabinet took oath in Islamabad, vowing to hold free and fair polls in the region that was granted a quasi province status in 2009 by central government of PPP under self governance order 2009.
“Better late than never, it will help remove misconception over government’s intension,” said a politician commenting on the unusually delayed announcement that fuelled speculation over holding of polls before October. Outpost.pk
