Gilgit Baltistan is part of Jammu and Kashmir says Dr Misfar Hassan
London, December 21 (PR) Dr Misfar Hassan, Convener of Jammu Kashmir Liberation League UK, has said that Gilgit Baltistan is a historical, geographical and constitutional part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, any change in its status at local level would neither be in accordance with the principled and historical stand of Pakistan on Kashmir in the UN nor would it be acceptable to the people of Jammu Kashmir.
Commenting on recent resolution adopted by the Gilgit Baltistan (GB) assembly asking Pakistan to give status of a province to GB, he said the areas are part of the state if JK and Pakistan has a historical stand in the UN on the issue. He said the people of GB also asked Mr Jinnah to amalgamate the areas into Pakistan in 1947 but Mr Jinnah did not accept the request at the time as his opinion was that the future of these areas will be decided along with the rest of Jammu Kashmir.
He said that when the first elected government was formed in the AJK in 1961 after wining the elections Mr K.H. Khurshid nominated Ishaq Balti from Gilgit areas to represent the region in the elected forum of AJK. Unfortunately after his unlawful dismissal by Gen Ayub Khan the representation of the people of GB was abolished and no subsequent government made any effort to restore that representation.
He further added that his resolution has come at a time when there is election process going on in Indian held Kashmir (IHK) and this resolution if acted upon would amount to division of the state of JK and that the people of JK will not tolerate at any cost. He said that the people of JK have paid a very price and sacrifice to get their right of self-determination promised by the UN in 1948 if any conspiracy is hatched at this time it would seriously affect the relations of the people of JK with the government of Pakistan.
Criticising the attitude of the political parties and leadership of Pakistan he said that it seems today’s leadership has no knowledge of the historical facts about the only problem of Pakistan and that is the issue of Kashmir. Asif Zardari established a provincial structure in the last tenure and now this resolution amounts to adding insult to injury of 100,000 people killed in Kashmir. Another matter of grave concern to people of Kashmir is direct participation of Pakistan based political parties in GB that are not constitutional part of Pakistan showing their poor knowledge towards a matter of significant concern for the State.
He said the people of Kashmir are looking at alternate strategies due to non-serious attitude of Pakistan authorities and if serious measures are not taken urgently then matters could take an unexpected turn.
